People who endured sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed renewed hope following their first encounter with the new Pope at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the Pope's decision to engage with them so soon in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any clergy member who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a minor. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who took the role in spring, has inherited this longstanding issue that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the institution and revisions to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later moved between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they expressed. "Both sides share the same goal, we want to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Multiple members of the coalition, which represents survivors and advocates from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their own experience and appeared "very humble, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and very open and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The group is advocating that revisions to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted experts and gathered materials that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned report highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The report also noted that victims consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they voiced hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a connection and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a step in the right direction," Hickey stated.

Hickey concluded that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
